Effort of Scots Antiquarian James Playfair (1738-1819) to create a "scientific" system of chronology by using eclipses as benchmarks to organize and reconcile dates of biblical (literally interpreted) and historical events.
First Edition. Printed for William Creech and sold in London by C.Dilly, J. Walter and J. Robson, Edinburgh, 1784.
Previous owner's note on title page reads "Presented to the Mercantile Library Association, E. N (?) Leslie, Esq. Feb. 15, 185? " Similar note naming "Edmund Leslie" without date at top of half-title page. Probably at one time the property of Edmund Norman Leslie (1814-1908) a "sturdy Scotsman" who resided in Skaneateles, NY and wrote a history of that town.
Large folio size approximately 20 x 13 x 3 inches. 419 pages with 8 page introduction and twenty-one unnumbered engraved plates some attached to each other forming fold-out tables. The engraved plates are in very good condition - complete and unmarked with some light foxing. The text and other tables are good - clean and unmarked but with tattered edges. The binding is poor - the well worn marbled boards from original half leather binding are present but detached, the spine is missing and the signatures of the text block are mostly separated.
