First printing of limited "Large Paper" edition of author's first book. This is number 57 of 150 copies printed at the Riverside Press, Cambridge in 1899. A collection of seven short stories in which characters speak in African-American vernacular, the stories deal with complex and difficult social issues in the post-Civil War era.

Cleveland, Ohio, born Charles Waddell Chesnutt (1858-1932) was an African-American writer and essayist. An associate of WEB DuBois and Booker T. Washington, he was a lawyer and prominent activist in the early 20th century.

229 pages bound in plain brown buckram with deckle edges and red and black title page.

Overall in good condition. The text is clean (with occasional thumbing) and securely bound. The spine and boards are darkened with a large chip missing from the paper spine label. Previous ownership marks on the front and back endpapers and juvenile art work on the reverse side of the free front endpaper. Images provided are of the actual book on offer.
